SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Francisco 49ers have signed rookie cornerback Phillip Adams to a four-year contract, the first of the team's eight draft picks to sign.

Both of the 49ers' projected starting cornerbacks, Nate Clements and Shawntae Spencer, skipped the recent organized team activities and other voluntary sessions in favor of private workouts closer to home.

Their absences gave other cornerbacks, such as offseason acquisition Karl Paymah, an extended chance to make an impression. For Paymah, it was a mixed bag.

On one hand, the 6-0, 195-pound former Minnesota Viking showed some bump-and-run skills and caught on quickly to the system. On the other hand, he drew the ire of Coach Mike Singletary with a blown coverage during a two-minute drill. Paymah let tight end Delanie Walker slip past him for a 31-yard touchdown from Alex Smith with about 20 seconds left on the clock.

Coaches let Paymah have it with some choice words.
